How broadcasting shapes Amos Vang’s career in personal injury law

As an active podcaster, classical pianist, and sports broadcaster, Amos Vang’s speaking and presentation skills are second to none. But as a personal injury lawyer in Oakville, it’s his ability to listen that makes him stand out from the crowd.

“My approach is always focused on the clients themselves. At the end of the day, they are the story, and the whole case is defined by their experience,” says Vang, an associate litigation lawyer with Oakville personal injury law firm Edwards Pollard LLP. “I need to hear what they have to say about their situation, what they’re going through at this moment, why it matters to them and how it’s going to affect them for the foreseeable future.”

From a young age, Vang felt destined for the legal profession and began channeling his efforts towards making his dream a reality from high school.

“It was always the plan for me,” he explains. “Looking at my skill set and personality as a whole, I thought that the best way for me to positively affect the community was through the law.”

Academic excellence

Eager to keep his future law practice options open, Vang studied a broad range of legal subjects during his university studies, graduating first with a B.A. in law at Carleton University — where he was awarded a Senate Medal for finishing in the top three per cent of his class — and later from the University of Ottawa, where he earned his J.D.

“I wanted to make sure I had enough of a primer in each area of the law at such an early stage of my legal career,” he says.

“I also tried to maintain a healthy school-life balance,” adds Vang, who threw himself into extra-curricular activities during his time in the nation’s capital.

While at Carleton, Vang discovered a talent for broadcasting, landing a role as a play-by-play announcer for the university’s hockey team. Within months, Vang was selected to announce at an NBA All-Star Challenge event that was part of the cross-Canada festivities marking the All-Star game’s first trip north of the border in 2016, and he has since added further play-by-play experience on CBC and TSN to his broadcasting resume.

“It’s been a wild journey and a ton of fun, but always more of a hobby,” Vang says.

Another of Vang’s broadcasting endeavours tied more closely to his professional ambitions. As host and associate producer of the Canadian Law Blog’s award-winning The Law School Show podcast, he reached a large audience of his peers across the country.

Engaging with legal luminaries

The role also gave Vang a chance to pick the brains of some of Canada’s most illustrious legal figures, with a list of interviewees that includes former Prime Minister Paul Martin and former Governor General David Johnston, as well as Supreme Court Justices Marshall Rothstein and Andromache Karakatsanis.

“We had a number of really awesome guests,” says Vang, who still indulges his passion through his own podcast, This is the Legend of…, which features interviews with luminaries from the worlds of sports, law, business, music and more.

After graduating from law school, Vang articled at a small Halton Region law firm, before honing his courtroom advocacy and client-relations skills at a family law boutique.

Current practice as a personal injury lawyer in Oakville at Edwards Pollard

All of those experiences have culminated at Edwards Pollard, where Vang guides clients through a variety of legal matters as an Oakville personal injury lawyer, helping them get the compensation they deserve for injuries arising from motor vehicle collisions, slips or trips and falls, medical malpractice and many more types of claims. He also fights for clients with employment law, property damage and other insurance claims.

“I’m used to handling very complex, emotionally driven files,” Vang says. “It all shows up in my current practice: that resilience, ability to actively listen and understand where my clients are coming from.”
